West Atlantic Avenue
West Atlantic Avenue is Delray's future…the area from I-95 to Swinton has possibilities and potential. The CRA-City effort to revitalize this area has been promised for over 20 years. The only result is empty lots and lost tax revenue. The West Atlantic community took matters in their own hands 15 years and prepared The SET Transformation Plan.* This comprehensive plan - prepared by a professional consulting firm - was completed with extensive input from the community. The current City Commission purposefully excluded this community-driven effort from the City Comprehensive Plan. Three abortive efforts were made. At least two of these ended in lawsuits. Why? Here are three good reasons:
1. Constant turnover in City Manager and staff
2. Bad RFP (Request for Proposal) process
3. Takeover of the CRA Board by the City Commission
Unless there is a change on the City Commission, the blight will continue.
As you drive this stretch of Atlantic Avenue, envision a thriving commercial, residential, attractively designed neighborhood. You have a chance in the next two election cycles to vote for candidates who will make a difference. Two of the candidates serve on the City Commission or CRA, and the other two are fresh faces, with new ideas. Understand the positions of each candidate on SET Transformation. Make your voice heard on March 14 that West Atlantic deserves better.
*SET stands for the West Settlers, the original residents of this neighborhood.
